How to write a ‘Thank you’ email after an Interview
An excellent way to stand out after an interview is to send a thank-you email. This is a simple step you can take to contribute to a good impression yet surprisingly many candidates do not take the time to send a thank-you note.
In case you’re unclear about what makes a thank-you email great, we’ve gathered a few tips and free templates to get you started.
The key things your thank-you email should include:
- Subject line: a great subject line is short and straightforward as it allows your recipient to immediately recognise what the email is about.
- Greeting: If you know the interviewer’s name, it is a great idea to address them personally.
- Note of appreciation: Your email should begin by expressing gratitude for the interviewer’s time and for the opportunity to be interviewed with the company.
- Recap of education and experience: Even though the interviewer already knows your qualifications and work experience, it’s a good idea to give an example of your work, or propose a solution to a problem that was raised during the interview. By doing this, you show the interviewer that you understand what it takes to be a good candidate for the position. You should also offer to answer any questions they might have.
- Next steps and contact information: Your email should end by expressing your appreciation for the interview and asking about the next steps. ‘Kind regards’, ‘Sincerely’, or ‘Best wishes’ are good ways to conclude your email. In addition, it is convenient for your recipient if you include your name, email address, and phone number.
Tips to consider for follow-up email after interview
- Proofread your email, as typos are likely to lead to you in the wrong direction.
- Email multiple interviewers. In case you have interviewed with multiple people, consider adapting your email slightly to make it more personal, for example by mentioning something you discussed during the interview.
- Timing is key. Thank you emails should be sent within 24 hours of your interview, so that you can demonstrate your interest in the role.
Although templates are extremely helpful, it is not a good idea to let your interviewer know that you’ve used one. A great thank-you email is one that sounds authentic.
The kind of email you write will vary based on the company you interviewed with. Take advantage of our free thank-you email templates.
