How to write a professional CV
The CV is your first chance to catch an employer’s attention and could make or break your chances of landing your dream job. You can write a great CV using our step-by-step guide and free CV template.
Your CV should be divided into five headings:
- Personal Profile
Begin your CV with an outline of your educational background, achievements, key skills and accomplishments. This should be 3-4 lines in length and should include one or two of the specific job titles you are targeting as this will help to increase your chances of having your CV screened for the appropriate job.
- Skills/Competencies
This section of your CV should highlight the competencies you possess in relation to the role you are applying for – aim to use similar key words from the description. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and prove that you are the ideal candidate for the role.
- Professional Experience
Your professional experience constitutes all the work you’ve undertaken over the past 10 years (avoid going any further than this). You should make a list of the dates, job titles and key responsibilities (especially if they link to the role you are applying for). Keep in mind that your experiences should be listed chronologically, so your most recent experience should be listed first.
- Education, Training and Qualifications
This section of your CV should outline your professional and personal growth and your passion to continue learning. Again, this should be listed chronologically and where possible related to the job role you are applying for.
- Interests/Hobbies
Finally, employers would like to know you on a personal level. Use this section of your CV to highlight what you enjoy doing in your free time. If you’re able to make it relevant to your career then that’s also great.
Common CV Mistakes:
- Not proof-reading
- Not written chronologically
- CV is not tailored to the job
- Unprofessional fonts or colours
- Incorrect personal details or using an inappropriate email address
- Missing information
- Inaccurate information
- Inconsistent tone of voice
- Making your CV too long (aim for 1-2 pages max)
